Frequently asked questions
As a husband and wife counseling team, our work is shaped by both professional training and lived experience. Having walked through our own relational recovery, we understand how patterns form, how disconnection takes hold, and what it takes to rebuild trust and intimacy over time. Our approach is rooted in attachment and informed by:
Relational Life Institute, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) developed by Sue Johnson, Prepare/Enrich, and Embody Lab for nervous system regulation.
We help individuals and couples slow down, identify the cycles that keep them stuck, and create new relational experiences that foster safety, emotional responsiveness, and lasting connection.
Yes for individual counseling services only, Distinct 1 Therapy, PLLC, is in-network with UHC, BCBS, Aetna, and Cigna through Misty. Joel is not credentialed with insurance panels and is considered private pay only.
Couples and family counseling services are not covered in-network and are private pay. Before scheduling, we encourage you to contact your insurance provider using the number on the back of your insurance card to verify your mental health benefits, coverage details, deductible, and any out-of-network reimbursement options.
For clients utilizing out-of-network benefits, our team can provide automatic monthly superbills through Jane upon request. Superbills are emailed directly to you and can be submitted through your insurance portal along with your out-of-network claim form. Once processed, your insurance provider will issue an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and, when applicable, reimbursement. Most claims are processed within approximately 30–45 business days.
Most clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum, establish safety, and identify core relational patterns. After the initial session, we recommend committing to at least five consecutive sessions to allow the work to deepen and create meaningful traction. As progress is made, sessions may transition to biweekly or maintenance visits based on your goals, needs, and stage of therapy. Session frequency is always collaborative and adjusted to support lasting change.
We understand that emergencies and unexpected situations happen, and we do our best to be understanding. To help us plan and respect everyone’s time, we ask that you please note our policy: sessions canceled within 24 hours of your appointment, for any reason, will be charged. We truly appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work together.
We are a husband-and-wife counseling team, but most sessions are conducted individually with one of us. We only work together in co-therapy sessions, which are designed for couples or families to receive support from both of us at the same time. These sessions are billed at a higher rate, reflecting the combined expertise and attention you receive.
Yes! Together we offer customized relational intensives for couples and families seeking focused, intentional healing work beyond traditional weekly counseling. Intensives are designed to create dedicated space for deeper exploration, repair, communication, and relational restoration.
Our intensives are tailored for:
Couples navigating betrayal, disconnection, trauma, conflict, or relational breakdown
Families with adult children seeking restoration, boundaries, healing, and healthier communication
Individuals within the family or couple system who need individual processing integrated into the intensive experience
While most sessions are conducted with one of us individually, we often encourage co-therapy sessions when working with couples or families especially in situations involving high conflict, complex relational dynamics, betrayal, trauma, addiction, controlling behaviors, or OCD patterns. Co-therapy allows clients to benefit from both of our perspectives, clinical approaches, and therapeutic support within the same session.
Misty is trained in Relational Life Therapy (RLT) and somatic EMDR. Joel is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). Together, we work from a deeply relational and trauma-informed lens, helping clients move beyond surface-level coping tools to address the root causes driving relational distress and disconnection.
With intensives creating space and time necessary for deeper inner healing, it provides comprehensive guidance, insight, and individualized support tailored to your unique relationship or family system.
